United States: In the United States, the mpox cases are soaring as high as twice what they were last year during this time. Therefore, health experts are urging the improvement of vaccination intake amid the growing spread of infection.
So far, about 511 cases have been registered in 2024 through March 16, as per the reports by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which were less than 300 by late March 2023.

Transmission rates are still a far cry below 2022 levels when there were tens of thousands of cases in the country. However, after a relatively quiet year last year, experts cite different reasons why the US is so vulnerable to an upsurge in the number of patients.

Dr. Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, stated, “This has the potential to become a fairly prevalent infectious disease, but the advantage with mpox is we have a vaccine that’s effective. We don’t have that for syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia or HIV,” CNN Health reported.
“We’ve had fairly good participation in the vaccination push, but we’re not anywhere close to getting most of the at-risk population vaccinated. Until that happens, we’re going to see outbreaks and upticks in cases in various places,” added Plescia.
